An "Ad-Hoc" test is
required in a situation where
there is no recognized test procedure, but testing must be done to prove that a
product is suitable. One good example is testing covers to protect the main
well-head valves for North Sea oil rigs. The valves operate quite slowly, and in
the event of a fire would have to continue to work in extreme temperatures for
some 15 minutes. An Ad-Hoc pool-fire test was designed to develop temperatures
in excess of 1000OC within three minutes of the fire starting!
These types of test require much
experience of testing, and a great deal of cooperation from the
laboratories!
